Choices learners connect with the spirit of Antarctic exploration

Learners at Choices, part of Trafford & Stockport College Group, have taken part in a creative and historically inspired project that could soon see their work published in a national magazine.

The activity, led by Job Coach Tim Foley, invited students to design their own sledging flags – personal emblems once used by early Antarctic explorers to express identity and pride.

The idea grew out of Tim’s own work. As the author of a book on a lesser-known figure who served alongside Sir Ernest Shackleton and Captain Robert Falcon Scott, Tim was recently invited to write an article for The New Polar Times, a soon-to-launch publication.

While browsing the magazine’s website, Tim discovered images of sledging flags and seeing the creative and expressive potential of these flags, Tim requested a printable template from the magazine so students could design their own.

Over the following weeks, learners at Choices took part in the project, supported by a PowerPoint resource that introduced the history of sledging flags. Students were invited to create their own, using colours, symbols, and Latin mottos that held personal meaning.

All designs were submitted to The New Polar Times, and all flags will be showcased either on their website or in the publication, which has selected 10 out of the 44 entries to feature.

To ensure every participant is recognised, Tim has created certificates of participation for all students who contributed designs. And there are plans for a small presentation ceremony where a senior leader will present the certificates to celebrate the students’ success.

Reflecting on the project, Tim said: “This has been one of the most rewarding activities I’ve ever introduced. The students responded with such imagination and enthusiasm, and it’s been incredible to watch them connect with history in a way that felt personal. It’s not just about the past; it’s about giving learners space to show who they are today.”

We look forward to hearing which designs will be featured in The New Polar Times and to celebrating the achievements of all those who took part.
